 "A CHRISTMAS CAROL"

The Novel A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, Published by Chapman & Hall, 19 December 1843 with the theme Christmas and is often played during the Christmas holidays. This novel tells about Ebenezer Scrooge who is rich but very miserly and then advised by his business partner, Marley and 3 other. The goal is that, Scrooge does not suffer the same fate as Marley, namely being punished for his greed and parsimony while living in the world.

MY OPINION

The first time I read this novel, I did not understand. But after read it, I can understand this novel.

This novel tells about men who has name Scrooge. He is rich but very miserly also don’t like Christmas. He advised by his business partner who has died 7 years ago, Jacob Marley, to change his life. Marley come to Scrooge at night with 3 ghosts and he must listen what the ghosts say or he will be like Marley.

·         The first ghost is the ghost of Christmas past. Showed about Scrooge’s childhood and the Christmas when Scrooge was child, also shown an older period when Scrooge was abandoned by his wife because he preferred to pursue his ambition namely Money.

·         The second ghost is the ghost of Christmas present. Showed accompany Scrooge to a market full of excitement with the people there buying everything for Christmas dinner. They also shown Bob Scritch’s house where they were having dinner as a family celebrating Christmas.

·         The third ghost is the ghost Christmas future. Showed a city and listened to business people talking about the death of someone while joking, but he did not see his figure there. Then the ghost shows the Scrooge office that is being led by his company by someone else. And Scrooge saw his name written on the tombstone. Then Scrooge again asked the ghost whether this would happen or just a possibility? But the ghost did not say anything. After that in his heart he promised to respect Christmas and learn from the past, present and future. Then the ghost shrinks and disappear.

In the Christmas morning, Scrooge ran to the church. There he met a little boy who said “Marry Christmas” then Scrooge came to his senses and immediately bought a turkey gift and sent it to Bob Scratchit’s house. Now he is well dressed and always smiles and always given money to those who beg him. Then he became Tiny Tim’s second father. Finally, he was never visited by spirits again, but the lessons he had learned were always embedded in Scrooge’s heart.

After I read this novel I can get someone; there is no said to repair a mistake, have a lot of money would not give you happiness forever and it is not forever that we hate is really bad.
